Some of them had a hold in the top that you could place a nub of a pencil in. Then when you would spin the tip you could get the top to spin on the pencil point and it would make neat scribble designs. My mother used to get mad at me and my brothers for breaking off the pencils in the house so they would be just long enough to use in the Whizzer tops.
