The change in Wendy’s happened after Dave Thomas died and Wendy took over. When Dave was alive the burgers were thinner, cooked faster, and retained their juice. After Dave died Wendy tried to class up the menu by making the burgers thicker, in doing so it made them not hang over the bun except the very corners of the patties. This also gives it a longer cooking time thus forcing more juice out of the burger drying them out. They also experimented using red onion and a sweeter crinkle cut pickle. Thank got they went back to the normal onion and pickles bringing back some of the original flavor. When the burger was thinner, I would get triples regularly, but now with the thicker patty I find it too much and only get doubles. If you look on youtube you can find old Wendy’s training videos from the 80’s and the difference in size and thickness of the patties I’m talking about.
