At first, I found it odd for a shirt of 1970s popularity was named after an actor who started in silent films, and passed away in 1949. In one candid photo from the 1930s, Beery wore long underwear, with a four-inch rip below the neck (Henley shirts were collarless). That may have been the inspiration (in the photo, Beery is drinking alcohol-laced hair tonic, during Prohibition).
