Years ago at our county fair, a both used to sell an ice cream sandwich consisting of a round of vanilla ice cream between two square waffle-type wafers. The outside of the wafer had the expected waffle squares, while the side facing the ice cream was flat. The wafers were not crisp, they were ever so slightly chewy, which meant that when you bit into them, the bite didn't usually completely detach from the rest of the sandwich, so it was a fight to have the whole thing not turn into a mess. Also, because the round ice cream did not reach clear to the edge of the square wafers, the whole thing "duck-billed" when you bit into it, with ice cream oozing out the other side. Messy overall, but still tasted good. I prefer the usual rectangular chocolate wafer style ice cream sandwich, though.
