Another story on big toys, namely the three original roller coasters, as components within Marriot's Great America, which opened Memorial Day in 1976 in Gurnee, Illinois. First was Williard's (Marriot) Whizzer. Second was Turn of the Century (renamed Demon) and Gulf Coaster, which was scrapped early due to fire risk. Originally, Great America celebrated the nation's Bicentennial in its different themed areas. Park was acquired by Bally-Six Flags in 1984. Bugs Bunny and company took residence starting in 1992. Found a radio commercial from May, 1976 announcing the grand opening. This was on WLS, and by Larry Lujack, who'd rejoined the Big 89 after three-plus-years absence. After hi first four years, Lujack left WLS late in 1972 (failed contract negotiation), worked for rival WCFL, the Big 10, until that station converted to elevator music as a format (March, 1976), then returned to WLS, until the disc jockey burn-out syndrome prompted retirement in 1985. Until his death in 2013, Mr. Lujack spent his remaining years out west.
