This story is about big toys...namely, amusement park rides and pinball machines. Eight years after Chicago's Riverview Park closed, A combined indoor amusement park and shopping mall opened in the southwest suburb of Bollingbrook, Illinois, named Old Chicago. It opened in June, 1975. This monster place was plagued with problems through its five-year run. The biggest was the 1976 opening of Great America in Gurnee. Old Chicago had numerous financial and safety issues (lack of adequate sprinkler system, not enough fire exits). Old Chicago maintained a high vacancy rate in its mall (no anchor stores like Carson's, Fields or Wieboldts wanted to open there). The 30 rides were cool (Chicago Loop roller coaster), and the place had a pinball arcade, with machines provided by the four major local companies. By 1979, the amusement rides were gone, and the building became one big, white elephant. It was demolished in 1986. Found a radio spot for Old Chicago on WCFL with Larry Lujack, who worked at 'CFL from late 1972 to early '76 (format change), in between two long stints at WLS, as "Super Jock."
