Found out much more on Chicago Roller Skates through early print media ads. Earliest I found dated 1911. The first plant was in the West Loop area, at 1100 W. Washington (near Racine Av.), then moved to the sprawling facility at Lake St. and Kostner Av. by 1920. While in the same building, different addresses were printed over the years, including 4408, 4432, 4453 (rented building across street) and 4456 W. Lake. The best skates sold for $5 in 1930. During the second world war, Chicago Skate, to conserve steel, leather and rubber, created roller skates with aluminum and plastic framing, along with wood or plastic wheels. While patriotic, the quality was compromised over normal, pre-war material. Compelled to produce more essential goods (ball bearings, hand grenade casings and camouflaged items), Chicago stopped producing roller skates during 1943, until war's end. Until 1940, child skates only cost a dollar or so. Now, theyre around $20.
