In my latest antique junket, I came across a toy from United Kingdom. A Polaroid Swinger Sentinel camera. Amazing how many of these are turning up in America. The history on this is interesting. Polaroid first marketed the Swinger in several Canadian cities, a short time before American release (July, 1965). The camera which only took B&W pictures, using a double-roll film (picture and negative) system, and required the user to coat each photo with a provided tool after development, and using the "YES" (early models, "NO" also) exposure device. In the U.S., Swinger cameras were $20. In the U.K., the same camera was around 27 British pounds. Many in Britain complained the price was too high. By 1968, the Swinger Sentinel was on sale, for around 20 pounds. Why? The Sentinel had no built-in flashgun (only good outdoor pictures could be taken). A flashgun was sold separately for around 5 pounds, and easily mounted to camera (AG-1 bulbs used). Toward 1970, as Polaroid started to phase-out the roll film and cameras, a later Sentinel model, with built-in flash, sold for around 22 pounds (prices went down as roll-film production was being reduced). Unclear to me is if the British market embraced the newer Big Swinger camera, with the pack-film system. The camera I saw has the detachable flashgun, a spool from the negative film roll, and a tube and coater with dried-up shellac. Manual was dated 3/68.
