There's a blog page for Silly Putty, but not for Play-Doh, the subject of this story. Play-Doh modeling clay goes back to 1956. The first few years, a kid-wizard was on containers, replaced in 1962 by the kid with the red smock and beret cap. Play-Doh was first made by Rainbow Crafts, acquired by Kenner in 1970, and now by Hasbro. From the Saturday morning cartoon vault: Earlier black & white TV commercial (kids using Fun Factory) which aired on the "Alvin" show over CBS (3/21/64), The clay had a salty taste (a preservative), and did not transfer newsprint like Silly Putty does. "Captain Kangaroo" Bob Keeshan also endorsed Play-Doh on his show in the early sixties.
