Michele: Baggies (made by Union Carbide at the time) was named Alligator Bags, from 1969 until 1972. TV commercials featuring the cartoon gator were all over network prime time. Around 1970, a stuffed gator toy was a mail-in premium. The actual sandwich bags were only a little tougher than the competitors, nothing special. The cartoon gator was a ploy to get kids to get parents to buy the product. Typical Madison Avenue tactics.
