My family loved the Red Barn when I was a kid in Cleveland in the seventies. The one On Harvard across from Gaylords in the Slavic Village where we lived was the one we went to most. Their sandwich called The Big Barney was cool, because that was my nickname as a kid. Their chicken was the big deal from what I remember. They had a "Chicken Snack" which was a box with like one piece, fries, slaw, and a roll. Just right for a kid! My family was especially fond of the chicken. My Aunt Rita LOVED The Red Barn chicken too, and we had to take her there every time we visited her. That was the one in Ashtabula, Ohio. I remember another one on the west side of Cleveland not far from the zoo. That one had a little playground. There was one on Miles Avenue, and I remember stopping there with Ma after doctor's appointments. It was our special place to go. I remember our Red Barn lunch having a serious tone after the doctor's once when Ma had to break the news to me that I had to have my tonsils and adenoids removed. When my family moved to Richmond, VA in 1977, we were all disappointed there were no Red Barns. When we went back to Ohio to visit, we always had to go to the Red Barn. Even after I stopped eating meat, I had to go for fries and slaw. The Red Barn had the best cole slaw in the world! Whenever I make slaw I am trying to duplicate their recipe. We were very sad when we returned to Cleveland and found all the Red Barns had closed. In my opinion it was better than the other fast food places, and they had burgers and chicken all under one roof.
