My great-grandfather was David Block of Block's Army-Navy. We lived in Portland but whenever we would visit Seattle we went to the store on 1st & Pike and Papa Dave would give us Swaby's pants and other clothes. They were not as popular in Portland as they were in Seattle, but I did love them. I had MANY different pairs over the years! My uncle Alvin Block took over the business from his dad and they expanded, opening additional Block's stores around the Seattle area. Unfortunately, times changed and Swaby's pants went out of style. The company did not survive, probably for two main reasons. First, they probably over-expanded. Second, they tried to become a store that sold trendy clothes for young people instead of sticking with the successful original concept of a military surplus shop. I miss those days and I'd love to see more photos of Swaby's. Of course, I just need to look at old photos of my family to remember what the pants looked like--we have plenty of pictures of us wearing them.
