Susan Porter, Nabisco made an oval shaped cookie that was sold in country stores in the 1950's and 60's called a Johnny Cake. They were dispensed from large clear glass cookie jars with red metal lids and cost a nickel each. Sunshine Biscuit Company made a similar tasting round cookie called a Dixie Cake. They were a little cheaper than Johnny Cakes and were often served as part of school lunches in the South. Two Johnny Cakes and a slice of hoop cheese were a real treat for us country boys when I was growing up. Dixie Cakes were available in grocery stores at least as recently as the mid-1980's. Sadly, both Johnny Cakes and Dixie Cakes, like my favorate cereal, kellogg's Corn Soya, are gone for good.
