I still have a similar toy also from the 60's. I don't know if it had an official name but it sounds like it could have been Squirmin' Herman's predecessor. There is no name on it and I know it didn't come in a box because my parents bought it for me at the 1964 NY World's Fair. It's a red furry rug like worm about 8" long and 3" wide. It has flat black eyeballs that move freely inside clear, flat plactic eyes and a small black piece of felt for a nose. Both are glued to the fur. When you lay it on a flat, textured surface and "pet" it, it curles up like an inchworm. It doesn't work very well anymore because the "sheepskin" backing has since worn out a bit. Im not sure how it didn't end up lost or tossed over the years but I'm kinda glad I still have it. One of my favorite childhood memories is of going to that fair so now the little guy is something I'd hate to part with.
