When I was a little kid in LaCrosse, Wisconsin, my Mom used to make me Spoon Candy. No one I'd ever met remembered or knew about it. Then I meet this guy, Boyd, who when I tell him about this magical, pudding treat I used to eat, says, "Oh, yes. Spoon Candy. I have a whole box of it. Probably the last on the planet." He'd bought it in San Francisco at an Asian store in the early 80's. He took it home and made it and it still tasted great. So five years go by dropping hints that I would love to have a box of this Spoon Candy. He finally gave me one and then I waited nine years before eating it because when I remembered that when I was a kid, I would eat it while watching "Land of the Giants". In particular, the vanilla pudding with the chocolate topping. My favorite. The box of spoon candy that Boyd had was the carmel pudding with hard, chocolate-flavored topping. So I waited for years because "Land of the Giants" wasn't out on DVD yet. This had to be done correctly. "Land of the Giant's" eventually comes out on DVD and my girlfriend finally make the spoon candy. It came out PERFECT! The chocolate topping wasn't lumpy, everything blended nicely, we let it set in the refrigerator and then when it was time, we brought it out and put "Land of the Giants" on. My girlfriend had never experienced Spoon Candy, being born in '77. All I can say is it was one of the strangest moments of my life. It really was like getting in a time machine and going back to 1972. That first bite brought back so many weird memories. It really tasted like the early 70's. I kept the box and the packaging inside. I would really love to have the vanilla with chocolate topping. But I'm just lucky to have been able to eat Spoon Candy so many years later. My girlfriend loved it also and now understood why I'd obsessed over it for so many years. Why doesn't Jello bring it back?
