Smurfs were a huge hit in Europe throughout the 1970s. America saw little of these blue beings until the Hanna-Barbera animated series premiered on NBC-TV in 1981. I found a Smurfette whistle, still in blister pack, while on an antique junket. The Smurf whistles were made in Hong Kong and imported by Helm Toys around 1982. Before the U.S. cartoon series began, Smurf toys were mainly produced in Germany and distributed throughout Europe. Loose Smurf whistles sell for $2 to $5, while those in unopened blister packs are worth over $10.
