I have a new wrench to throw into this discussion. I grew up in Wisconsin and in the early 70’s, my mom would include a treat in our lunch bags every day. That treat? Sweetie Pies! What are Sweeties Pies? The exact same thing as Scooter Pies and Moon pies: soft graham-crackery cookies, marshmallow filling and covered in chocolate coating. Long rectangular box containing 12 individually wrapped pies. Then, when watching Laverne and Shirley, I saw and heard reference to Scooter pies. Same type of box, same type of treat, though I had never seen them in the stores. Then suddenly Sweetie Pies vanished and were replaced with Scooter Pies. Only later as an adult did I come across Moon Pies. From the comments above, there seems to be very definite camps who prefer Moon Pies vs. Scooter Pies and vice versa, though I find odd that some can comment their preferred treat is the better one IF they have not had both and so can compare them. I have eaten all three types over the years (Sweetie, Scooter and Moon) and, personally, have not noticed much of a significant difference between them, with the exception that the Moon Pies tend to have what I think is a dryer, crumblier cookie than the others. My lack of noticing a major difference may be due to the time factor and that eating Moon Pies came only after the other versions were no longer available – too much time between them to adequately compare them. Perhaps if I could turn back time to when all three were being made simultaneously and did a taste-test, I might come up with other differences, but for the most part, they are all the same thing to me. I think most people will likely voice a preference for whichever product they were introduced to as a child. Today, Moon Pies are the only ones I see. I can find gas stations that sell the regular size and the Dollar Tree sometimes has in stock a mini-sized version, which I actually prefer because it’s a more sensibly-seized snack/treat. For a while I also saw “double-sized” Moon Pies for sale: cookie, marshmallow, cookie, marshmallow, cookie, coated in chocolate. I don’t see those anymore, so perhaps they were just too big and didn’t sell well. Or maybe they’re just not sold in this area anymore. Anyway, good memories!
