Here is my recollection of the conversation in the original Ring Ding commercial (ca. 1958/9) between two young boys wearing paper hats and playing in large open-ended metal drums=> Sam: Ring Ding, Ring Ding, wish I had a Ring Ding. Boy: Sam, what's a Ring Ding? Sam: It's a round chocolate cake with creamy filling inside. Boy: Yeah? Sam: And it's got chocolate frosting all the way around it. Boy: Even on the bottom? Sam: Yeah, on the bottom, too. (pause) And you can buy 'em at the store. Boy: Hey, Sam, you know what? Sam: What? Boy: I got a nickel. Sam: Come on, let's get one! Both: Ring Ding, Ring Ding, we're gonna get a Ring Ding. Later in chorus after splitting and sharing the cake [that's how big it was]: Ring Ding, Ring Ding, wish we had another Ring Ding! Later iteration substitutes "some money" for "a nickel" and "get some" for "get one." (PS. Thanks for this wonderful website, and the wistful remembrances of simpler, innocent, if not happier times alas lost forever.)
