I had reason to be in "The Army Store" on Garland Road of yesterday and I flashed-back to begging my mother to drive me to the Army/Navy store on Denton Drive (in her no-A/C VW bug), just west of Love Field to get some Red Snap jeans. Huge bells, looooow rise, huge belt loops (for WIDE leather belts) brush denim. I had two pairs of regular denim and a super soft brush denim pair that was tie-dyed in stripes of red and blue — my ultra-cool favorites. I finally grew out of them when I turned 15 and so turned them over to my 13-year-old cousin Phyllis who was just barely able to squeeze into them. She turned heads in them at Hillcrest High School for another year and finally turned them into super-short shorts. Remember "Red Snap" printed on the brass snaps? I think one reason for their DFW popularity was that the only other acceptable pair of jeans were "Levis Big Bells" IF you could find a pair, and IF you could find your size which was nearly impossible. I wore 27" X 34" — normally all I could find in that size was an empty shelf or a circular white plastic ring on an empty hanging rod. Red Snap to the rescue! They not only had my size but a whole selection of styles. Don't tell anyone, but I remember stealing glances of a certain girl wearing Red Snap jeans with a zipper about the length of a postage stamp. Talk about Heartbreakers! All she was missing was a purple umbrella and a fifty cent hat. So crazy that shops of that era were so backward they couldn't stock what every kid wanted! Was it ignorance? Puritanical values? A fear of kids crashing their 10-speeds? How is it that the only place that had what kids wanted during that whole '70s window-in-time was your local Army/Navy store? Anyway, so fun to read everyone's comments. I had no idea Red Snap was a local DFW phenomenon.
