We bought ours at the Army/Navy store on Jefferson in Oak Cliff (Dallas). I stuck with the basic denim, but I had plenty of friends that had lots of different colors. Guys and girls all wore them the same....the lower the better. Not to push it too far, but if you weren't showing a little butt cleavage, then you weren't wearing them low enough. I would hold the snaps up to my hand, and I could tell if they were going to be low enough even before I tried them on. Us guys kept it reasonable, but I knew quite a few girls that really let it "hang out", and nobody thought twice about it. Of course, in the warmer/hotter weather is when you really noticed. The guys would wear those half t-shirts, or no shirt at all, and the girls would wear short t-shirts, bikini tops. Once summer rolled around, they'd become cut-offs and back in the 70's that meant they were really short for all. On the bottom end, we usually took the hem out, and let them fray. The bigger the bell the better. Sometimes it helped because nobody could really tell if you were barefoot or not. In the summer it didn't matter with the shorts. Everybody went barefoot everywhere. I remember my girlfriend and I would go walking around the neighborhood, or park in our cut-off Red Snaps, just barely hanging on our hips. Both of us barefoot. She in a bikini top, and me shirtless. Those were the days!
