Working with limited resources, I've found some pieces of the Powerhouse candy bar. First introduced in 1927 by the Walther Johnson Company (Chicago), later acquired by Williamson, subsequently, by Peter Paul in 1971. Life Magazine advertised this bar frequently in the 1940s, using a muscular cartoon man named Powerhouse. Ads were presented in comic-strip form. Some felt this was misleading, to make consumers think that eating Powerhouse bars would make them stronger. These bars were scarce on the civilian market come 1944 and '45, with sugar rationed and 70 percent of them going to military post exchanges. Sales lagged into the 1970s, eventually discontinued.
