Found at article with a knock-off recipe for Libby's Spread n' Heat Pizza. Note: I have not made this recipe and cannot vouch for how close it is to the original. If someone tries it, let us know! CLIPPED FROM Detroit Free Press, Detroit, Michigan 24 Sep 1975, Page 26 Spread the Flavor Another convenience item has popped onto Detroit food shelves: It's a pizza flavored spread to use on bread or Eaglish muffins for individual-sized pizzas. Called ‘Spread and Heat Pizza” the product is put out by Libby, McNeill & Libby in small five-ounce containers with enough spread for seven slices of toast. It’s a good item to use when in a quandry for appetizers for many guests, but it retails for about 45 cents — rather expensive for only seven slices of toast. There are three types — green pepper and onion, cheese, or sausage flavor — all artificially flavored. The Tower Kitchen threw together-a similar product that could be stored in the refrigcrator for a few weeks and would cost half as much: Pizza Spread In small saucepan combine one-half teaspoon cornstarch with a small amount of tomato sauce from an eight-ounce cat unfit smooth. Stir in remaining tomato sauce along with three tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese, one-half teaspoon salt or to taste, and one-fourth teaspoon each oregano, basil and sugar. Cook over low heat until bubbly and slightly thickened, about five minutes. Pour into jar or container and refrigerate. Makes enough spread for about 16 slices of bread or English muffins. Spread about one tablespoon pizza spread on bread. Place about six inches from broiler. Broil about six minutes, or until bubbly. For other flavors, sprinkle on cooked sausage, ham, green pepper, onion, or mushrooms.
