Pizza Hut originated in Wichita, Kansas, in 1959. It took several years to grow into possibly the only national pizza chain to provide full table service for dine-in customers, bumping the age-old trend of mom-and-pop Italian eateries. A cartoon mascot, Pizza Hut Pete, was seen around stores until 1974. Kiddie premiums included Pete hand puppets and vinyl banks. After Pepsi bought Pizza Hut in 1976, pasta was introduced, spaghetti and cavatina (which had a VERY short leash). The personal pan pizza came soon after. The Hut's PPP always had a hard crust. Wisconsin-based Rocky Rococo (f. Madison, 1974) knows how to make good pan pizza. Rocky's also offers thin-crust pizza, and several pasta dishes. The chain has only 30 stores, with only two outside Wisconsin. Regarding cavatini, it's more of a favorite in old-school Italian eateries. Pizza Hut tried too hard to equal the quality, resulting in little demand for it. Some 15 years ago, Pizza Hut converted to Chicken Shack (Wing Street). In SE Wisconsin, many former Hut buildings have become payday loan-shark and wireless phone places.
