Just now at a garage sale I bought a box of Pillsbury Food Sticks with the original price tag of 59¢(!), chewy chocolate mint flavor. I remember eating these and liking them as a kid, so it was so cool finding this box – completely unopened with the original sticker stamp price tag on it. But here's the thing folks, despite the fact that it was promoted as a "nutritionally balanced food," just one look at the nutrition facts on the side of the box is enough to make your heart palpitate a little (and not in the good way). It's interesting to see how they broke things down back then. The units of measurement are just a percentage referred to as "Approximate Nutritional Analysis." And in this case we’re talking 10% protein, 13% fat (partially hydrogenated - yum), and 68% carbohydrates. The first three ingredients in those food sticks we all remember so fondly are sugar, corn syrup, and partially hydrogenated vegetable oil (with freshness preserves - hooray!). There’s the other stuff you’d expect like cocoa powder and chocolate, water and nonfat dry milk. I don’t see mint anywhere; maybe that’s the “natural and artificial flavors.” What do you suppose could get considered natural flavor back then? The rest of the ingredients are a bunch of vitamin fillers and something called orthophosphate – I don’t know what that is. I can vaguely remember how they tasted – good but kind of vitaminey. Anyway, nothing I’m into eating these days but it’s a fun trip down memory lane and I’m going to send it to my sister to see if she remembers them. The advertising is really fun, makes me smile. They called it “The Food for Busy People.” Hmm, I’m pretty busy these days…maybe I should eat it! I wonder if the freshness has been preserved enough. Copyright is 1971 – waddya think – still edible? :-D
