She was my favorite doll of all time. One time, I was visiting my sister (she was 22, I was 7) who lived about 45 minutes from me, for the weekend; she was driving me home and we were more than halfway there when I realized I left NBTL at her apartment. I was not a "diva" child, but I cried and begged her to go back. She promised to mail her to me as soon as she got home, but I said "no, please, I have to have my baby!" So she drove back for the doll. I still have her, and all the clothes my mother made for her. I never knew the boys were anatomically correct; I guess I was too young to pay attention to that. But I applaud Mattel for pioneering that in the commercial market.
