Monopoly goes back to 1935, a Parker Bros. original. The markers were steel and the houses/hotels were wooden. The play money was smaller in size. Prior to 1978, the only major changes happened, first, during WWII, in which the markers were also made of wood, to conserve steel. By 1960, the houses and hotels were plastic, the play bills larger and with modern printed features. 1978 started a whole new thing: Monopoly games with different themes. Movies, TV shows, custom games based on cities, even foreign countries. Monopoly was always so popular that Parker Bros./Hasbro never had to advertise on TV.
