I had worked at Mars Candy Corporation on the westside of Chicago when these bars were made. Yes, it was a white nougat with the almonds on top, not within the nougat, but I could have sworn that it was darker chocolate & not the mild chocolate. The first 'line' that I worked on was the Mars bar line. We would sit back where the nougat was cut into bars, it would then go under a drum that would first place a line of chocolate down on top then the almonds were dropped on top...we would sit right after that to make sure that there were no more than 4 almonds per bar before it went under the chocolate spreader for the final chocolate layer. Many times the line would get out of sink & the chocolate & almonds were not landing on the bars at which point we had to take our arms & sweep everything off the belt into tubs...what a chocolate & almond mess it was, but it was fun & we would have chocolate & almond wars with each other, flinging the chocolate & almonds at each other. Sure miss that bar!! Another fun thing was to bring saltine crackers back from break or lunch/dinner & give them to the chocolate line men to lay down on the belt before the bars started coming out...then we had yummy chocolate covered saltine crackers to munch on...yumo!
