From the prime time TV vault, a rustic cabin sets this Manwich commercial. A boy carries large firewood logs with no help from Grandpa. Inside, Grandma fires up the wood burning stove to prepare Manwich. The usual slogan recited. This aired during "Carter Country" on ABC (12/8/77). In this day and culture, "Carter Country" would be tagged as offensive as "Dukes of Hazzard," but for different reasons. Set in a fictional, small Georgia city, "Carter Country" not only opened up old stereotypes about Southern folk, but also made light about segregation and discrimination. One character, Jasper (Jason Harvey) was an older, racist cop who showed nothing but contempt toward his African-American superior, Sgt. Baker (Keene Holliday). The police chief (Victor French) never fired, nor even disciplined, Jasper. Today's world? No way! Would not be tolerated. On occasion, the Civil War and Confederacy are mentioned during the 50-episode sitcom which was not funny. A veteran character actor, French had many roles in TV series. Among these, Agent 44 on "Get Smart." Also, an infrequent regular on "Bonanza." Holliday later co-starred with Andy Griffith in "Matlock." Vernee Watson earlier played a student on "Welcome Back, Kotter." Guich Kooch later co-starred with Gabe Kaplan in the short-lived "Lewis and Clark."
