The Layered Look was a big fashion them of the early to mid-70s, and it went beyond just a shirt-and-sweater-vest combination. In the mid-70s, it was popular for women to wear, say, a cowlneck sweater under an oversized peasant blouse under a vest or shawl over a peasant skirt that might be layered over another, slightly longer peasant skirt. There was even what they called a "layered leg," wool tights worn over different heights of earth-toned socks and legwarmers over full boots. Mostly for cold climates, as you might imagine.
