Guy's BBQ chips in the late 60s early 70s were the gold standard. Smoky, hot, not too sweet. But by the late 70s, they weren't as good. Guy's started skimping on the seasoning. Then after Borden took over, they were even worse. (tangential thought: Borden could have followed the lead of the merged Frito-Lay company and built an national brand as Wise-Guy's. During the 80s, cheese curls and corn chips went under the Wise brand that Borden had purchased on the east coast.) The big regional chip companies have mostly fallen. In many areas of the country, there is no effective competition to Frito-lay. About competition, the one thing all the companies in SE Iowa wanted over the decades was to crush Sterzing's. It never happened. Yhey're still around, greasy as ever, except the blend of vegetable and palm oils is now strictly vegetable oil. And no, I don't think the current reincarnation of Guy's will measure up.
