Anatomy of a song. While inside a Gurnee, Illinois antique mall, oldies music was piped in. A strange version of "Hang On, Sloopy" among the tunes. Why did it sound familiar? Not the McCoys version (Bang Records), but The Yardbirds version (Epic Records, US; Columbia in UK) featuring the group's middle lead guitarist, Jeff Beck. Title was "My Girl Sloopy," and was on the first Great Shakes Shake-Out EP promotional record from Columbia. The Yardbird song was twice as long (5 and 1/2 minutes) than The MCoy tune, which was a much bigger hit in late 1965. The Yardbird song had a faster beat, but with several long instrumental portions. Lead singer Keith Relf sounded somewhat erratic, compared to Rick derringer on the McCoy side. The McCoys follow-up tune, "Fever," sounded much like "Sloopy," and didn't chart well. The Yardbirds had three hit songs, but "My Girl Sloopy" wasn't one.
