One case of Great Shakes going on the road. Found a couple pictures of some young salespeople, with chaperone, selling mixed Great Shakes by the cup in a rented stand. This was the summer of 1967, the final season for Chicago's Riverview Amusement Park. A gas generator powered the refrigerator to keep milk cool, and hot water was provided to wash the mixing cups and lids. Great Shakes were served in Styrofoam cups with lids. To even make profit, at least a quarter had to be charged. Hot water, gas, milk and Great Shakes mix were cheap in those days. A month or so after this experiment, Riverview, after 63 years, closed up for good (it was said that Mayor R.J. Daley thought it an eyesore in his modernizing city). After closure and demolition, DeVry University built a new campus on property. On the north end, near Addison St., Lane Tech High School built a football stadium. Artifacts like keys and old coins have turned up along the Chicago River bank north of Belmont Av. It showed that Great Shakes was well in peak that summer. The people selling Great Shakes there appeared to be fundraising for a school function.
