The Glen Rock beverages that was located in Waukegan had no connection to the Milwaukee, Wisconsin Glen Rock. Glen Rock was our family business until 1959 and my grandfather had a legal agreement with the Milwaukee company that their respective distribution areas would stop at the state line. There were 2 sizes of bottles - the smaller 7 oz. and a larger 26 oz. Originally, the largest customers were the picnic groves and resorts spread around the lakes areas in northeastern Illinois as well as a decent tavern business using what Dad always called "mixers". While they were still competing with the major brands and the larger bottlers from Chicago, think Canfields and Royal Crown, the varieties offered gave them an edge. The advent of the pressurized cannister delivery systems (pre-mix or post-mix)which standardized the fountain service we are all familiar with nowadays is what really did in the small independent bottlers all over the country. Ever since the sale in '59 the owners, of which there were several different ones, kept sales going by selling through local liqour stores and small marts in addition to selling out of the front door (literally), but eventually the inconvienence of having to store the empties between deliveries became too much for the smaller outlets.
