I helped my dad, a Frito-Lay salesman, during the summer that they first came out. I used to make the store deliveries with him as a teen. He told me that Frito used the SW Zone of Frito to test the sales against other brands. It did well in his district, and even in his Zone, which included almost a quarter of the US, but over all sales were not there. He said he thought it was something else. Like the "Frito-Bandito" lawsuit, remember the little pincel erasers, and cool stuff that came in the bags? I still can't stand the Mexican gov for suing Frito over it. We both loved those two flavors of Fandango's! I rember going out to his Frito truck on Fridays and getting a couple of bags each for the weekend. Our family lived them! He said that the company faced some kind of copyright infringement on the design, logo, or name and fought it until they were forced to withdraw. Just like the Firto Bandito thing. Anyway that's what the company told him at the time. Everyone that remembers them, loves them and wishes they would bring them back. Then when I tell them about what happened...a good thing ruined by lawyers. Go figure! I often wondered what if they changed the shape, name or something, why couldn't they bring them back?
