My mother bought me my first pair of Dr. Scholl's exercise sandals (in white) to wear to school. The girls in my class thought that they looked good and even defended me when my male friends would tease me, mostly regarding the color. They insisted that white was a girls color. I didn't let that bother me, and soon bought a pair on my own in tan. I loved the clop-clop sound they made on the floors of the classrooms and hallways and the slap of the wood on my soles.
