Reviewing the history of Chiclets, the gum was originally a Fleer product, going back to 1885. Fleer sold the brand to Adams in 1924, because sales of Dubble Bubble gum superseded Chiclets. A major rival in the square-shaped chewing gum was Beech Nut, another 19th century pioneer. In modern times, Fleer was bought by Tootsie Roll, Beech Nut by Nestle, Adams merged with Cadbury.
