I tried to recreate the cherry chip cake/frosting combo from the 60's and 70's by adding cut up maraschino cherries and some of the cherry juice from the jar to a yellow cake mix and doing the same to a basic recipe of homemade buttercream frosting. I may have added a tad of almond flavoring to the icing to get more intense cherry flavor. It worked! I, too, miss many of the box cakes that had matching boxed icing. The canned icing tastes and smells disgusting. It takes about two minutes to make good homemade icing, especially in a food processor, so I don't go near the junk in a can.Z
