In brief, the rise and fall of the Burger Chef chain. Based in Indianapolis, the first store opened in 1957. After nine years of expansion, General Foods bought the chain in 1968. Over 1,000 stores were operating in 1973. When Kraft pondered buying General Foods, it wanted no part of a fast-food chain among its new assets, so Burger Chef merged with Hardees in the early 1990s. Burger Chef dissolved completely in 1996. The Danville store operates independently. Found an early TV commercial from 1964, an animated one with the comic-strip Family Circus. The child-like Burger Chef is shown (like Speedy from McDonald's). The family orders Triple Treats, which were combos of a hamburger, regular fry and milkshake. the combo was 60 cents then. Today, it would be around $4.
