I didn't become aware of these until the late 70s, fall 1978, when flares were going out of style. That year, Brittanias and other women's jeans were straight-leg ("cigarette-leg" they were called at the time), in brand-new, dark blue denim (very different from the faded denim popular earlier in the decade), with a waistband at about the navel, and worn rolled up to the ankles at the bottom to show off Candie's slides. Girls that year wore them with untucked, oversized blouses and men's shirts and tunics belted with segmented metal belts or with rope cords with the ends left to hang over one hip. Brittanias had more prominent white topstitching and were considered less cool than Calvin Kleins and Gloria Vanderbilts in my junior high school, and they somehow looked more awkward.
