It's true, everyone wore these, men and women in identical styles. And this was before the 90s when women who wore identical styles to men came to be suspected of being lesbians. When Donna on "That 70s Show" wore them in the 90s, I remember people saying that meant she was kind of a "tomboy," but you never heard that in the 70s; we thought the word tomboy sounded like a throwback term from the 1950s. It was all about practicality and equality in the 70s and guys and girls really did usually dress kind of the same.
