I was surprised to see them revived in the 1990s, along with lots of other 70s fashions. They still look really early 70s to me (and they didn't cost $100 back then like they do today, either). Shoes like Birkenstocks and clogs were so out of style in the anti-70s 80s that it was really weird to see them come back, but they're so comfortable and practical that people wanted to wear them - that's true of a lot of 70s clothes, by the way, since that was an era of liberation and practicality, when constricting, uncomfortable clothes were rejected even by fashion designers.
