On the Chicago Scene. At the Volo (Illinois) Antique Mall, found a copy of the CHICAGO SUN-TIMES from 1980. Wrigley's Big Red was still advertised as new, though a couple years in production. My favorite SUN TIMES columnist was Gary Deeb, the TV-radio critic. Many considered him the Howard Cosell of the newspaper industry. He trashed personalities and shows on TV, radio and movies he didn't like, while expressing restrained praise to those he liked. Deeb worked at the TRIBUNE (1973-78) and the SUN-TIMES (until 1983) then moved to television and WLS, Ch. 7, where he was told to restrain his commentary, which apparently rubbed him the wrong way. Deeb was gone by 1986, leaving Chicago for Ohio. In his newspaper columns, Deeb pulled no punches, and called it as he saw it. Very transparent, very daring. A great columnist.
