Actually, the Alta Beer by Blitz-Weinhard was not the first. In Los Angeles, Grace Brothers Brewing Co. created Alta Special Export Beer, and sold it in steel cans back in 1939 and 1940. You needed a can opener, and opening instructions were printed on the can. The mandated (until 1950) phrase, "Internal Revenue Tax Paid," also was printed. The beer didn't sell well, and was dropped after 17 months. The Blitz-Weinhard brewery in Portland operated from 1856 until 1999. Its version of Alta Beer was made from 1973 to 1980. Now owned by Miller-Coors, the current beer lineup all starts with "Henry Weinhard," then the type of brew.
