The Yumbo in Perth Western Australia was a massive size ham and cheese burger (or roll) made by Hungry Jacks (the Australian name for Burger King) it wasn't a sandwich. It was yum! Red Bull another local gourmet food outlet produced a competitor called the Hambo it wasn't as big but just as tasty! I used to work at Red Bull (this was actually 1978). To make one (because Hungry Jacks don't make them anymore and Red Bull no longer exists) slice a white roll in half, fold in lots of slices of shaved ham, with 2 slices of Krafty type cheese and microwave on normal for about 45 seconds. Just had one this morning and it was delicious!

The Yumbo was a great sandwich. When I was in High School (1976) We used to eat at Burger King a lot for lunch. We always ordered a Yumbo and orange drink. They were a little messy but oh, so good!!

I really miss those yumbos! Bring them back!! I get the ham & cheese at Arby's with 3 little pieces of ham or Hardee's had the best also until the Hardee's went away there are only about 6 of them in the state of MN. I want a yumbo every day! I'm going to contact the marketing people at BK!!!!

I found out today that you can get Yumbos at BK again. Just order a Ham Egg & Cheese and hold the egg, has the old bun and all. 2008

If there's egg on it it's not technically a Yumbo!"Hold the egg on my Yumbo!"Let the cries ring out at check outs everywhere.Man,I want a Yumbo real bad now.
Doc - November 10, 2008 - Report this comment
Or order it without egg and say "Know what you call that?" "No. What?" "That's a Godamn Yumbo now baby!"
Doc - November 10, 2008 - Report this comment
I set my alarm...I'm so getting Yumbos for breakfast tomorrow. Might even get one with egg just for kicks. I'll ask if they have any Star Wars sticker books left.

I'd rather have a Yumbo than a friggin Whaler.Whalers had all kinds of nasty stuff on em.
Doc - November 10, 2008 - Report this comment
Whalers stunk. They harpooned whales for them. My sister made me eat one and I threw it up. I want a Yumbo in all its styrofoam container greatness.

Ok, I'm on vaca in puerto rico and I'm happy to say the yumbo and whaler are alive and well here. Just had a yumbo, needed to google it when u got back cause I never heard of it before.

The Whaler was replaced by the Ocean Catch Burger in Australia because it was deemed politically incorrect. The name suggested whale meat was used which is a big no, no in Australia. Basically was a sesame seed bun, lettuce, mayo and a deep fried fish cake. Personally I liked them and they were far more fresh tasting than the equivalent Fillet O Fish at Maccas.

So I called 305-378-3535, this is BK's Consumer Relations Dept. I called today, and the lady who answered had no idea what I was talking about - so I gave them my ph# and asked if they could bring the Yumbo back. We'll see...........or you could just make it at home – but what fun would that be ????

finaly got my answer on this my favorite now how about kmart subs, and the heated sandwiches from the corner store before microwaves, remember them!

I loved the Yumbo and I worked for Burger King at the time. I made mine with lettuce, tomato, onion and mayo added to the original sandwich, it was very tasty that way as well

The Whaler was just a fish sandwich. They just changed the name but it had cod or haddock. Today, they use slag (cheap gray) fish for their sandwiches.

They still have it n Puerto Rico.

i can still smell the yumbo and the styro-foam box it came in. I'm sure they microwaved them in the box. Damn they were messy, had my first one at the Ala Moauana store in Honolulu in 1975.
BIG DOG - May 17, 2011 - Report this comment
YUMBO'S WERE THE BEST! I THINK THEY HAD A SET UP THAT PUNCTURED THE BOTTOM OF THE BOX, AND STEAMED THE SANDWICH. ANYONE KNOW?

I worked at Burger King in the 70's and Yumbo's were the best. The bun was like one of those that were made from yellow potatoes, had a yellow tint, softer than a regular bun, piled high with ham and cheese and melted in an oven that came before microwaves....I wrote Burger King and they said they had no record of such a sandwich!!!! Imaging that!!!!

I worked at BK during the 70's. was actually a manager and District Manager. The Yumbo was the best. No, Big Dog. It was a styrofoam clamshell. sometimes it would puncture if you microwaved it too long and the cheese would melt a hole in the container!! LOL... I make my own Yumbo's now!

Every Friday night after work; my husband and I would stop at our local Burger King. I always ordered the Yumbo. The bun was a bit of heaven and the ham was piled high and the cheese would drip all over you. Was not a sandwich I would eat in the car. I loved how the cheese dripped down my chin. This was in the early 80s and oh how very disappointed I was when it was taken off the menu. BRING BACK THE YUMBO!!!!!!!!

The Yumbo was the best. I worked at BK in the 70's and I would deep fry the ham, place it on the bun, add a slice of cheese, pickles, and mustard. And of course, it was great just the way it was originally served. I agree...Bring it back!

I worked at BK in 1974, just after they got the Amana Radarange (Microwave). The secret to the Yumbo taste was that between the ham and the cheese, there was a pat of butter that melted into the ham. They were my favorite, and are missed.

Lydia, if you could get me some pics of the cheese dribbling down your chin I'll pay top dollar!

In the mid-70's, I loved the Yumbo, too! (bring it back, please); and I liked the Whaler way better than the BK Big Fish they have today! Oh, for the old days...

I was born in 1961 in Ft. Lauderdale and remember the Yumbo we would get at the Burger King on Oakland Park and Andrews Ave. It came in a foiled-paper wrap, and the cheese just melted perfectly and the ham was smokey and sweet!!! And the little glove-like puppets and paper crowns they used to give to kids. Good Times! I too, wish they would bring this back!!!! Burger King, are you listening to us????? - LOL!

The Yumbo: I have a friend (nutritionist) whose husband was a Burger King franchisee in 70's. I don't know about the pat of butter - I do remember the cheese soft & gooey. AND the bun was not white bread - it was a pale yellow and tasted like a cross between King's Hawaiian bread & challah bread. My dad always said it was an "egg bread"

I saw the commercial for the Yumbo today. Yeah, I've been waiting for this since the early 80's. I haven't eaten at Burger King since they stopped making the Yumbo. Hope it will be the same.

loved both the yumbo and the whaler, the whaler being on a whopper bun not the small specialty bun they traded it for

With Yumbo coming back, can the awesome original Whaler fish sandwich be far behind??? Hmmmmm, I hope so!
mossmangene@yahoo.com - December 12, 2014 - Report this comment
Seems I remember you had to order a yumbo instead of ham and cheese because it wasn't real cheese. Anyone else remember or was this in another universe?

I got the new Yumbo last week. It was nothing like the poriginal sandwhich. I loved the original Yumbo. I did not like the new one at all. Please bring back the poriginal sandwhich!!
Donna - January 14, 2017 - Report this comment
The original Yumbo was thinly sliced ham with melted cheese poured over the top on an egg bun. It was in a yellow styrofoam container. They were a yummy mess and other than the whopper it was the best item on Burger Kings menu. They really messed up when they dropped it from the menu. All the other sandwiches mentioned were for the breakfast menu. My family went to Burger King on a regular basis just for the Yumbo. Bad move Burger King. If your going to bring a sandwich back, do the right one!

Yes the reboot was totally inferior to the original Yumbo. I just remember ham and gooey cheese on a bun unlike any at a fast food place.
