What? No comments on this household staple? OMG we ate this stuff all the time. We NEVER had real cheese. Miracle Whip and Velveeta sandwiches. Pea and Velveeta salad (with Miracle whip dressing of course) I melted the stuff on bread in a little toaster oven with condensed tomato soup to make a "pizza". It got all bubbly and crisped. I used to cut it with a piece of thread when I couldn't find the "cheese cutter" (which I don't think could cut through any real cheese.) Comes in metallic plastic wrapper that if you didn't open right, it would be impossible to reclose without leaving some of it uncovered. This lead to hard horrible cheese patches you had to cut off. My dad bought the cheap knock off which was vile. I hate Velveeta now but then it was common fare.

I have to confess, for a gal who can take or leave cheese, Velveeta is great. Not a fine cheese but tasty and it melts smoothly. Makes great grilled cheese sandwiches.... a bowl of cream of chicken soup and a Velveeta grilled cheese with a crunchy kosher pickle was a favorite childhood lunch. It makes a good, creamy mac & cheese with a splash of milk.

Velveeta(R) cheese is still around and still sold in super markets. It is made by Kraft(R) (now known as the KraftFoods Company), and still delicious. :D

Velveeta makes the best grilled cheese sandwiches. Today you can buy Velveeta by the box or individually wrapped slices

Velveeta goes back to the early 1920s in Monroe, NY. The Monroe Cheese Co. developed it, selling the name for peanuts to Kraft by 1928. A processed cheese product, velvety smooth (and saltier) than other cheeses. Today, it sells for nearly $5 a pound, whether block, sliced or made like Cheez Whiz.

From Los Angeles: KMPC, radio home of Gary Owens. During a late 1970 broadcast, he smoothly rattles off commercials, including Kraft's Par Kay and Velveeta. Owens worked the afternoon radio show daily except Sunday. One paperback book on "Laugh-In" stated that Owens only worked at NBC a few hours, one day a week (to tape his mock announcements), and had infrequent contact with Rowan, Martin, or other troupe members. In early seasons, members would occasionally join him in the booth to do skits. November will mark five years since his passing. A classy guy!
