Description
Back the the '70s the Taco Flavor Doritos were MUCH better than you find in the grocery stores (in the mid-west) today! I'm not sure why they would change the flavor so drastically and if they went back to the original recipe I'd buy them much more! Very rarely do I buy the new taco flavor.

teh original taco flavor ROCKED.the new split bags of doritos (has 2 flavors in one bag-one is chicken wings and blue cheese, the other is zesty taco and chipotle something)the zesty taco is definately the original flavor! i was psyched!it tasted sooo good.
Lea - January 30, 2008 - Report this comment
The original taco doritos were awesome. The ones now taste like they have some sort of fake sour cream or cheese in the mix. The originals tasted like taco seasoning.
Sam - February 20, 2008 - Report this comment
Yes, Lea!! you are absolutely right!! The "zesty taco" of today is NOT like "original taco" from the 1970's. Original taco just is not made the same way by Frito Lay...I have called them many times and I have NEVER gotten a straight answer from them as to why they changed the recipe (for the worse)!! Today's taco is full of bogus, nasty cheese flavor, too much sugar, sour cream and artificial colors and preservatives. The original taco doritos had no artificial anything...just pure, delicious spices!! Also, I remember the underlying corn flavor of the taco chips to be more robust, and the chips seemed more like authentic corn, not the thin, soft, flaky chips of today!! Please let me know if others out there remember these same things from the 1970's original taco doritos??

I called Frito Lay and they product is available only available in certain regions, when I was in ELA in the 1970s they were everywhere, and now its these other flavored concoctions, Bring them back or let me order them PLEEEEEEZE

I live south of Chicago. Sometimes I can find the original Taco Doritos. They also have the "fake" ones out, too. Look for a bag with taco in metallic silver. It says something like "they're back."

Sam, I remember Taco Doritos just like you do. They were exactly what a taco flavored tortilla chip should be and I would describe them exactly as you did. I was in love with her. They were my chip, the chip made just for me, as if I sat with the company when they were formulated. Then she left me! I've been broken-hearted ever since.

Hey folks! I just found Taco Doritos on eBay! They'll ship them anywhere! Yea! It's been about 20 years since I had them. The drought is over! It's going to be a happy new year now!!
Sam - January 06, 2009 - Report this comment
Bill, Sorry, but do not be fooled....I would guess the "Taco" Doritos you found on Ebay to still not be "original formula from the 1970's". I would guess they stiill have the bogus sour cream, milk, cheese ingredients that were not in "original formula". Let me know...Look at ingredient list on back of bag...also, do they truly taste like the originals you remember? I would bet not. Thanks, Sam

When I was in Camp Fire Girls we used to go camping and make Open Faced Tacos using Taco flavored Doritos, take some Doritos, put some taco seasoned ground beef, cheese, lettuce, tomato and sour cream and there ya go! I still like to make them every now and then for my kids.
Paul M - February 13, 2009 - Report this comment
Also known as nachos TC Tina. I too made them like you say. Still do for a change from time to time.

I fondly remember the 70's era TACO flavored Doritos. I can still remember the zesty flavor. Nothing, Frito Lays has come out since has matched the level of goodness the original Taco had. I guess the big question is, if they reintroduced the original Taco today, would we love them as much or does our memory of them just make them seem better than they were?!
crazy amy - June 21, 2009 - Report this comment
HEY, BILL IN BUFFALO! were the e-bay doritos the real deal or what? dont leave us hangin' man-we need a fix! and are the ebay ones old bags bought in the 70's,or the same formula made fresh-i dont want stale ones. idoubt they could duplicate them as back in th 70's they fried things in REAL fat not this unsaturated crap. i'm waiting with baited (and hopefulley son to be taco smelling) breath. I love you guys-all of you!

I e-mailed Frito Lay and they said that TACO Doritos were dis-continued. Don't know if that means permanently or temporary. Too bad...they sold well here in Ohio.
Sam - December 05, 2009 - Report this comment
Hello Bill/Amy/Jeff H/Others on this blog: Unfortunately, Frito Lay has not re-produced the "Original Taco" flavor from the 1970's. Why they will not go back to this "perfect" recipe is beyond me! You would think that waiting 35 years would be enough! Does anyone have an empty bag of Taco flavor from the 1970's. If so, check the ingredient list on the back of the bag and let us know what it says. I can guarantee the "new taco flavors" are nothing like the "original"!!
Kevin - December 12, 2009 - Report this comment
These were brought back for a short time in the Halloween season of 2008, along with the 4-cheese ones. Every taco flavor sinse these has been nasty... Taco Supreme, Taco Bell Taco Supreme, and whatever it is now. All just gross.
Sam - December 16, 2009 - Report this comment
Kevin (and others) , Don't be fooled...the so-called return of Taco from Halloween 2008 was still NOT "Original" Taco Flavor from the 1970's!! In fact, it was the same "fake Taco" flavor (cheaper, bogus, sour cream and cheese ingredients) that Frito "unfortunately" changed to in the early 1980's!! I agree with you that the current Taco flavor is still gross!
Matt - December 27, 2009 - Report this comment
I agree with everyone here. I used to demand that my mother buy them, even though she detested the way they made my breath smell! I would sit with a whole bag after school watching Leave it to Beaver reruns and Lost in Space. How I wish we could have that taste again! Damn that focus group that preferred the sour cream change!

I remember back in 1972 I ate a whole bag of taco Doritos and it made a big red sore inside my cheek! But I miss them so much. The ones they came out with 1/2 chipotle 1/2 taco were closest but not really the real thing. Actually taco and original flavored Doritos came before Nacho flavor did. I would eat the taco flavored doritos with a large coke. And coca cola tasted better back then too.

I just loved Taco Doritos too! Every Friday night it was me, a bag of Taco Doritos watching the Friday night prime time shows on ABC...The Brady Bunch and The Partridge Family. That was about how long it took me as an 11 year old to eat the whole bag!! Bought them faithfully until they stopped making them..never like any other version since! Miss them!!!

Rumor has it, the reason the original Taco doritos were discontinued is because the formula somehow "gummed up" the machines. at least, that is what I remember reading online a few years ago from someone in-the-know.

Is it just me, or did Frito-lay trick us twice and sneakily change the the Cool Ranch formula from the early 90s, as well? I remember those being much more tasty/flavorful than now . . . weren't the chips a little thicker, too? Maybe it's just me!

I love Taco, the ORIGINAL taco doritoes, the others taste like licked 40 spices at one time, GROSS!!! When they came back in october I went to all stores that had them and bought every single bag they had then made a special spot in the cabinet to store them all. I would pay 8 bucks a bag too, just to have them. If they had any sense the would bring it back annually like Mcdonalds does mcribs or shamrock shakes.

Even though they say they will be the original, I doubt they will because of the oil they cooked them in back then and the chip they used too...I first starting eating the original TACO DORITOS in 1982 when my girlfriend was hooked on them...They were the best ! We always searched for the chips for the most seasoning on it...Some of the broken off bits has mega seasoning on them and those were the best ever.....AHHH the memories...I am so glad I am not the only one that remembers how they USE TO TASTE!!! I also remember when TACO BELL USE TO TASTE GOOD......everything sucks now!

Nope, not the same for me in central coast California. Got two bags at 7/11 labeled "Limited Edition" in the left corner. They have the retro bag. They taste sour cream cheese with a very slight chili powder flavor.
Sam - January 08, 2011 - Report this comment
Chilegod--You are 100% correct. I agree totally with you. While the "bag" is retro and looks good, the actual "taco chip" still is not "original taco" from the 1970's. It is a cheap imitation that is closer, but still NOT the same as the "ORIGINAL TACO 1970's RECIPE". The key is the ingredient list on the back which has "sour cream, cheese, and milk" ingredients. The "ORGININAL TACO 1970's" did NOT have sour cream and cheese flavor---just pure, authentic, delicious combination of spices, taco flavor, red pepper, etc. Frito Lay is still lying when they say this is the "original taco" formula. Why they can't go back to the 70's version after 35 years of waiting is beyond me!! Does anyone else who tried the current (December 2010) Retro Taco chips agree with me??
sea1njw - January 09, 2011 - Report this comment

i am going to get a bag, but the real tacos had no SOUR CREAM...if thats the case then these are bogus....and the spices on the chips were dark and thick...these sound like the late 80s bs versions.....oh well..close but no cigar it sounds like..i have waited 30 years for this...oh boy

DONT BE FOOLED...THE BAG IS RETRO...THE CHIPS ARE GARBAGE ! i picked up that bag of chips today...i read the ingredients in the store and i was 99% sure i would be totally disappointed..why? this might be the recipe from the late 80s or 90s..this is NOT the recipe of the 70s...those chips had NO CHEDDAR CHEESE, NO SOUR CREAM, AND many of the other ingredients...the chips of the 1970s (the original recipe) were just plain tortilla chips SMOTHERED IN DELICOUS TACO SEASONING...some chips got more seasoning then others.....the original bag looked MUCH LIKE THIS THOUGH...but it had WINDOW where you can actually see the chips inside, so you can see if that particular bag was heavily seasoned or lightly seasoned.....i have waited now 25 years or more for frito lay to bring back the retro ORIGINAL chips..i still have to wait..WHEN I OPENED THE BAG IT STUNK...I TRIED ONE CHIP AND SPIT IT OUT....this coming from a guy who would eat a bag a day in my childhood.....these chips were GROSS ! I AM SHOCKED from the people on this blog stating they loved these and that it brought back childhood memories..how old are you 18? and you are thinking back to the later imitations? WHY OH WHY CANT THEY BRING BACK THE ORIGINAL RECIPE??? THE SALSA VERDE CHIPS DORITOS MAKE ARE A LITTLE CLOSER, AND THE SWEET CHILI CHIPS ARE PRETTY GOOD..BUT THEY DESTROEYED THE TACO CHIPS..TOTALLY

I remember the original (well, the 80s flavor anyway) too, and the Taco Bell/Late Night flavors aren't even close. Like a previous poster, I remember reading somewhere that the old recipe "gummed up" the machines too much. But surely technology has come a long way since then...? And YES, I absolutely remember the bag design with the taco with sour cream topping!! (even though there wasn't any sour cream in the recipe). I am off to purchase a bag of the newest version of "the original" also, so we'll see...

Found the new Taco Chips in Seattle! Loved rick's comments (I too looked thru the window to pick the heavily seasoned bag), but don't quite agree. No, the new ones are not quite the same as the '70's chips that I would ration to one bag a week (since my boyfriend hated by breath afterwards) but they come closer than anything so far. I've found Mexi-Snax Pico de Gallo brand comes close.

It's all about producing products that are more cost effective for the company. These additives that are supposed to taste like THE REAL THING mostly never do, and are much cheaper to produce than the, authentic, real ingredients. Rick/Larry--Yes, I totally agree with you. I bought a bag of the "retro Taco" chips that just came out. Again, the retro bag looks good, but---the chips are AWFUL tasting!!--i dumped nearly the whole bag on the ground in hopes the birds or other small animals would eat them since I could not stand their awful taste---again, they are but a "SHADOW" of the taco chips of the 1970's. They are NOT the same recipe as the 1970's. they are in fact, taco-bell flavored and also the same as the sour cream 2008 version and the chipotle ranch/taco collision bags with sour cream and fake cheese ingredients with very limited actual taco and real spice flavor of the 1970's version. 1970's absolutley delicious taco chips were much darker, had a burnt orange color to them, only used vegetable oil (no trans fats even back then) ...and had only "real" taco and other spices with no sour cream, sugar, milk and cheese additives. I, in fact, obtained a 1970's picture of a bag of taco doritoes and the ingredient list on the back of the bag is small and does NOT include sour cream, cheese, sugar, milk ingredients of today's taco doritoes.

not gonna lie, i was excited for these chips but they taste like vomit (literally). i could not understand what all the hype was over bringing these chips back, but now i am glad to learn that they still are not the same chips from the 70s. if frito-lay isn't going to bring back the original flavor, the taco flavor from the early 2000s was good enough for me, especially in comparison to these new "original" doritos.
Tom - February 06, 2011 - Report this comment
Definatly not the original flavor from the 70's. I found this site and was so excited i ran out and bought 2 bags. While they are better than the late nite Taco and Taco Bell flavored ones, they taste different than the original. This is the way i describe them. When i first put the chip into my mouth it taste totaly different than the original. Almost a completly different taste. But then the after taste is closer than the original. I will not buy any more and i feel they are tainting the originals by trying to market them as such.

PLEASE PLEASE TRUST ME.....THESE "RETRO TACO CHIPS" ARE ABSOLUTE GARBAGE !! again i tell my story..i am 42 years old...in and around 1974 thru probably around 1982 or so i used to eat maybe 5 bags a week of the ORIGINAL TACO CHIPS......they had a see thru panel and you could find the bags that looked to be most heavily seasoned.......the chips ingredients were very simple....THERE WAS ZERO, I REPEAT ZERO CHEESE IN THE ORIGINAL CHIPS !!! I HATE CHEESY SNACKS....THEY ALSO HAD ZERO..I REPEAT ZERO SOUR CREAM ! I HATE SOUR CREAM..ALWAYS HAVED...THE ORIGINALS HAD NO BUTTERMILK AND MILK PRODUCTS LIKE THESE TRASHY FAKES HAVE... they were SIMPLY a plain but tasty corn chip with a lot of very tasty spices on them......ya know like onion powder, garlic powder, maybe some peppery seasonings....i dont know exactly..BUT I DO KNOW THEY HAD NO CHEESE, SOUR CREAM OR MILK PRODUCTS..GROSS !! I SENT A LETTER TO FRITO LAY...i asked to actually SPEAK to a PRODUCT MANAGER....they wrote me a little blurb back thanking me for my "PASSION' for their products..and said they would talk about my letter at some meetings..that was the end of that....that was on january 11th..which was the day i heard about all of this fuss with the new chips... ...again ANYONE who is saying these chips are delicious and "just like when i was a kid' is too young to know what in the HELL we are talking about here.....i am happy for them...go on eating this crap.......but you may never know the greatest chip in the world..the ORIGINAL dorito taco chip.... ....when i purchased the bag on january 11th i was soooo dissapointed when i read the ingredients..but i just had to buy the bag..when i opened it up the DISGUISTING ODOR OF STALE SOUR CREAM CAME OUT OF THE BAG...GROSS ! i attempted to eat a chip....i literally, not figuratively spit it out the window of my car...IT WAS GROSSSSSSSS ! ...I SUGGEST ANYONE AND EVERYONE WHO WANTS TO EVER GET THE ORIGINALS BACK TO GO TO THE FRITO LAY WEBSITE AND SHOOT THEM OFF AN EMAIL......MAYBE SOMEDAY I CAN ONCE AGAIN TASTE THE CHIP I HAVENT TASTED IN 25 OR MORE YEARS.

I am with those of you that think the new ones are BOGUS. I was so excited when I saw the orange bag with the little sombrero with "taco favor" inside. I bought the two bags that the store had, my mouth was watering thinking of the seventies flavor, that I remember distinctly. Once I opened the bag, I was SOOOO DISAPPOINTED, there are hints of taco flavor, but all the other ingredients overwhelmed and I refuse to even eat the rest and I will take the second unopened bag back. I am happy for those of you that think this is like the seventies, I totally disagree and think you have the seventies mixed up with the 90's flavor. These are like the Taco Flavor they came out with a few years back, with flavors like this I will stick to popcorn.

I just bought The Taco Flavored ones at Walmart today. They say they are the original, but I have to say "No, good try though". My Uncle use to work for Frito Lay back in the days of the Original Taco Flavored ones. I remember also looking through the window of the bag to see the seasonings. The originals did not have sour cream in them. However the new ones they brought out still do. They are closer then some of the others out there, but r still not the real ones. :(

I'm glad to see the taco Doritos back. I couldn't stand the tacos after midnight flavor. I'll keep buying them despite what others are saying on here.

I got all excited yesterday when I saw the little sombrero in the retro style packaging. Taco Doritos were my favorite chip of all time. I opened the bag with excitement and right away smelled the sour cream, ugh. What a HUGE disappointment. I'm in agreement with everyone else here, why can't they make the "original" Taco Doritos?

I'm really sorry to say that these taco doritos are NOT the same as the original 70's, They taste like the nacho dorito mixed with the ranch dorito. Now they all taste the same just with different names, VERY DISAPPOINTING.

The last time I had a Taco Dorito was over 30 years ago. I bought two bags yesterday and I am happy with the flavor... it's close enough for me because my tastebud are 30 years older as well. Many things taste a little different then I remember from years ago.

This new "return" of taco dorito is a "lie". It is NOT original formula of the 1970's. It is merely an overload of sourcream and cheese flavor, with hardly any real "spices" and "taco" flavor of the original 1970's chips. There is a HUGE difference in taste and quality from the original 1970's chips.

I too was jumping up and down in Safeway when I first saw these! I couldn't believe it. I'd been waiting since the early 80s when they discontinued these for them to bring them back. What a disappointment. Rick's hit it on the head, just look at the ingredients. Not even close to the same. Even Taco's at Midnight were closer. The Mexisnax Pick de Gallo ones are the closest thing I've found. They used to be at health food stores but now I can't find those! Below is proof that they're not the same. From another board from a Frito Lay rep. Hi again, Doritos Taco fans! Couple of updates... The seasoning recipe for the Taco-flavored Doritos on sale now is the same recipe as in the 80's - though some suppliers could have changed over the years. So, that could be why some of you taste a bit of a difference. The original seasoning blend was updated in the 80's, and that is the blend we are using now. For those of you who love it (like me!), Doritos Taco is staying in stores after Super Bowl. So, you'll still be able to find it (but will be in updated packaging). Thanks! -

haha its funny that this person "Rick" has taken the time to post under several different names about how he hated these chips..get a life anyways i've been waiting for these chips to come back for over 20 years and while they arent 100 percent the same they are about 95 percent and thats good enough for me...they are delicious..so enjoy em while you can

I hate these NEW original taco doritos, they are not the same! I didn't even finish the bag I bought 2 weeks ago. I was so surprised so many people thought they were the original until I realized they were remembering the 80's? chips. I guess I'll never taste the original 70's taco doritos again... I agree with Mike, the Midnight Tacos were closer than these, but still far from the original.

These 2010 version "original taco" are NOT ORIGINAL!!--NOT EVEN CLOSE TO THE TRUE 1970'S TACO CHIPS---THESE 2010 CHIPS ARE OVERLOADED WITH SOUR CREAM AND CHEESE AND BLEU CHEESE AND MILK--THEY TASTE LIKE RANCH AND NACHO CHEESE MIXED TOGETHER--ABSOLUTELY AWFUL TASTING--THE ORIGINAL 1970s CHIPS WERE ABSOLUTELY HIGH QUALITY, UNIQUE, AND EXTREMELY GOOD-TASTING WITH A LOT OF REAL, AUTHENTIC SPICES---RED PEPPER, CUMIN, BLACK PEPPER, PAPRIKA, TACO SEASONING, ETC.---NO CHEESE, NO SOUR CREAM.---DO NOT BE FOOLED!!! FRITO LAY IS A LIAR AND THEY ARE DECEPTIVE---THEY ARE PASSING AN INFERIOR PRODUCT AS BEING "ORIGINAL"---I CALLED FRITO LAY---THEIR LAME EXCUSE IS THAT THEY CAN NO LONGER GET THE RIGHT SPICES SINCE THE SPICE SUPPLIER THEY USED IN THE 1970s IS OUT OF BUSINESS.--WHAT A BOGUS EXCUSE!! THE SAME SPICES ON THIS PLANET HAVE BEEN AROUND FOR 3000 YEARS!!

I used to work for Frito Lay in the 70's, The Taco flavor had to be discontinued because of an ingredient that could no longer be used. None of the chip makers can use it anymore and they could not get the recipe to taste right without this additive.

I too saw the retro bags of Doritos in the store and bought two of them. They're pretty bland and as the bag says "contains milk ingredients". They don't even have a window on the bag - just a picture of a window! Fool me once, shame on you...

tony...i just looked at this board after a few months..you are clueless ! i did NOT post under any assumed names....you have no clue what you are talking about...again i say it with all truth...these retro chips are pathetic and awful..and not the same as the 1970s chips..THEY ARE NOT EVEN SOMEWHAT SIMILAR..THEY ARE HIDEOUS !!..AND to the guy who made the ridiculous comment that some spice could not be used anymore i laugh at that as well...so they could delete that one spice (if what you say is true) and use another..or delete that altogether...you NEED NOT put 12 other AWFUL ingredients in its place, add milk ingredients, sour cream , cheese etc.....CHEESE IS A HUGE INGREDIENT..AND THE ORIGINAL TACOS HAD NO CHEESE !!!! AND TO THE TOTAL MORON WHO SAID THAT THESE ARE 95 PERCENT THE SAME...I SAY THEY ARE 9.5 PERCENT THE SAME...AND 90 PERCENT DIFFERENT...DEAR GOD !

..by the way the ARTISAN style chips that frito lay came out with are a little more true to the old ingredients of the taco flavor...but they are still far from them...they at least dont have cheese and sour cream and butter milk etc.....the exact name of the bag is FIRE ROASTED CHIPOTLE..again its not even close to the tacos of the 70s..but are enjoyable......BUT do have bean ingredients etc....

Canada has a brand of chips called Arriba, and they make a zesty taco flavor... Tastes just like taco seasoning you would use cooking beef for, well, tacos. SO. GOOD.

These taste exactly as I remember. My favorite way to eat them is with bean dip. If they are not exact they are still awesome, even my kids are going crazy with them. As a kid, I used to eat these on taco night, since I hated tacos.

Here in Dallas, the rumor going around the school yard was that some ingredient in the Taco Doritos was poisonous. Or just could make you sick. There were plenty of things back then taken off the market. The original pop rocks had that rumor. Anyone remember the weird plastic goop you put on the end of a straw and blow it up like a balloon? It would harden into a ball you could play with but you may die from the experience. Anyway, all the kids from my generation were affected by this change in flavor and mark time by it. Strange but true.

I used to get Taco chips in the late 70s early 80s....they had no cheese on them....they almost tasted like taco meat! with a weird kinda after taste. no sour cream no cheese. I dont know about a banned ingredient in 1977...I had them after that and they had no sour cream on them. I remember them being really good yet they kinda made you sick. I dont know what these new ones are but they are not the ones I remember.

They already have that yucky Ranch flavor and the Taco flavor taste similar. I knew as soon as I ate that first bite, i was tasting nasty sour cream and cheese. You can't bring back a classic and completely change the flavor. I never bought another bag after that first one.

I found high-res photo of a vintage Taco Doritos bag. The bag says ©1968 Frito Lay, Inc. Ingredients: Corn, Vegetable Oil with BHA and BHT as preservatives, Torula Yeast, Salt, Monosodium Glutamate, Flour, Cocoa, Spices and Flavorings. 1¾ oz. for 15¢, and no sour cream or cheese!

I remember my mom putting original taco Doritos in my lunch and I wanted to savor the flavor for as long as I could so I would crunch them up in to tiny pieces and eat them slowly. There is NO COMPARRISON to the original taco Doritos and I too wish they would bring them back :( I remember distinctly talking about how the new ones have some sour cream flavor added a long time ago and today I stumbled on to this blog. Does anyone know if there is any update? Any chance of getting the origional and better taco Doritos back???

Why oh why does Frito Lay insist on putting that nasty sour cream flavoring into every taco flavored Doritos they keep releasing! I had high hopes that these chips would be like the awesome taco flavor Doritos of the 70s and early 80s, but alas, it was not to be. Almost as soon as I put the chip into my mouth and chewed, I spat it out. The disgusting sour cream flavoring overpowers every other flavoring this chip has. Without the sour cream, this would probably be a pretty damned good chip.

Was 1986 the year they added sour cream in the original Doritos Taco Flavor and ruined them? I was very upset when they did this.

Try Juanita's brand of Chilipeno flavored tortilla chips if you can find in your area. No blue cheese flavoring added like the Taco chips are now.

Why does everyone keep referring to Taco Doritos as the Original Flavor. There was another "flavor" before Taco was introduced, the truly tortilla chip no-added-flavoring version. That's what I really wish I could find, and not that silly claims-to-be-original not-even-close version they brought back a few years ago. A bag of those and a bowl of bean dip were a heavenly treat.

FL added the sour cream/cheese flavor in the spring of 1986. There was a free-coupon ad campaign to promote the exciting new taste, and that's when I stopped eating them. First New Coke, then this. The 80s sucked.

I remember looking at the ingredients in the 70s, though of course I can't remember them all. As others have said, there was no dairy at all. What I do remember was that cocoa powder was listed as an ingredient. I don't see this in the current formulation(s). (It's an expensive ingredient!) I do remember faintly noticing the flavor.
