we used to sell these at the Wawa I worked at. I ate a pack every day whenever they delivered them. I actually called Stroehmann to see if they still made them but, NO

Found a recipe that is almost exactly the same taste! 1/2 cup shortening 2 1/2 cups all purpose flour 2 cups sugar 3/4 teaspoon salt 3/4 teaspoon baking soda 1/4 teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon allspice 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves 3/4 teaspoon nutmeg 1/2 cup milk 2 eggs 2 cups applesauce raisins mix flour and shortening together mix sugar, salt, soda, powder, cinnamon, allspice, cloves, and nutmeg together add spices to flour mixture gradually, add milk and applesauce, mix well, fold in raisins. Pour into greased and floured 13 x 9 pan and bake at 350 degrees for 45 to 50 minutes. This recipe is so close!!! I love it!!

Man, do I miss these. They were the only serious alternative to the Tastykakes. I'm going to try the recipe, Jo. Why do outfits take great products of the market? Brigns to mind two other childhood favorites from Nabisco - Spiced Wafers (in the huge orange box at Halloween and Brown Edge Wafers in the bright blue wrapper. Ah ...

Loved these cakes way back when. We had packed brown bag lunches everyday for school and these were a staple. Couldn't get enough of them. Such a disappointment when they were taken off the market. Going to try the recipe to see if it really comes close.

I remember them, too. They were sooooo good and moist. I also miss a drink mix you added to milk called PDQ. It was made by Borden and my favorite flavor was egg nog. They don't make that anymore either :(

These were my Mom's fav. Me: Philly, Frankford HS class of 1978. The little grocery store at Oakland and ? sold them. Bought a package of two before classes practically every day. Great snack after smoking up! Gonna try the recipe...

I've been reading your comments and you're all right!!! I can't find anything like Horn and Hardart's or Stroehmann's Applesauce cakes. I daydream about them all the time. I really miss them. I'm in Vegas now and we just recently got Tastykakes back.

i really liked the applesauce bars, wish they still made them. i remember going to the bread thrift store, where they had bread and goodies that were day old stuff. beings that they were really reasonable, you could get a cupcake for 25 cents back then. that was way cool. nowadays,i've heard some people take the day olds or more and put them in a freezer, not stroemans either, and bring them out later and they taste yuh. how i long for those day but unfortunatly, thing don't stay the same,i will try making these cupcakes though, thank you for posting.

LOVED the applesauce cupcakes!! We grew up with a Stroehman's bakery(store) a couple blocks away & it was ALWAYS a treat to go there. They also had yellow cupcakes with orange icing!! YUM

May 20, 2019 I just made an Applesauce Raisin & Nut spice cake I found on line from JustAPinch (.COM) /recipes/dessert/cake/applesauce-raisin-nut-spice-cake and it definitely reminds me of these twin cakes that my parents use to put in my school lunch box every day in the 70's. However, I did NOT add the 1 cup chopped walnuts, NOR did I do the Rum Glaze topping so I did not put them in the list below. Ingredients 3 c flour 2 tsp baking soda 1 tsp cinnamon 1/2 tsp allspice, ground 2 stick butter, softened 1 c brown sugar 1 c sugar 1 egg 2 c applesauce unsweetened 1 c raisins Bake at 350F for approx 60-70 minutes for a bundt pan until toothpick comes out clean, then let cool in pan. I soaked the raisins in the applesauce to hydrate them for a couple of hours. I am going to try to make them as cupcakes next, now that I realize they remind me of the Stroehmann's apple sauce cakes from the 70's. Good Luck! I enjoyed it!

Everyone's right. They tasted wonderful. I was just craving them. And to John, the Nabisco fan, I remember the wonderful aroma wafting from the Nabisco factory in NE Philly when they were making the Nilla Wafers...MMMM!

I wish they would bring these back even if it was only during the fall months. I ate these every day for breakfast. LOVED THEM!
