Description
I recalled this soda recently when I found a bottle cap that had the name on it. I think it was around in the 70's and have not noticed it in stores lately. Another drink that I liked was "Chocolate Soldier" definitely was around in the late 60's, and early 70's. A similar drink around now is "Yoo-Hoo" and is not nearly as good as Chocolate Soldier.

Purple Passion is good to drink. That was the tag line of their jingle. $1,000,000 reward if someone posts that somewhere.
Hacksaw - October 07, 2007 - Report this comment
They had the psychedelic can. Used to love that. Back in the 70's, we'd go to Soda Hut and get a case of soda for $4 with our White Rock products (Time Out, Tahitian Treat among them)

If I remember correctly it was pale purple/bluish in color and tasted like grape. My folks let me bring a can of Purple Passion or Mountain Dew in my Kelloggs cereal characters lunch box. (Even got to use the Land of the Giants lunch box if my brothers didn't get to it first. Damn, those were the days.)

Oh those were the days - Mom and Dad would by a case of sodas and my favorites were Tahitian Treat, Cactus Cooler, Purple Passion and Shasta Cream Soda. They were awesome. We can still get Tahitian Treat and I think that Cactus cooler is still available in some areas. They were so much better than so many of the fruit sodas available today. Also Bubble Up, anyone remember that?

When I was a kid (late 60's) and lucky enough to be given a quarter, I would go up to the store and buy a can of Purple Passion (15 cents), a candy or ice cream bar (5 cents), and 10 pieces of penny candy (5 cents-yup, there was some candy that were 2 pieces for a penny!!) That was a jackpot day! ;)

My dad worked for Canada Dry and used to bing home cases of Purple Passion, Cactus Cooler, Tahitian Treat, Rootie Rootbeer, Dads Rootbeer, and Choc-ola in the late 60's and early 70's. I think Purple Passion was grape and ginger-ale combined.

When I was growing up in Baton Rouge in the 1970s, my father would often buy a huge assortment of Canada Dry drinks at Kroger: Purple Passion, Tahitian Treat, Rootie Root Beer, Ginger Ale, and the standard fruit flavors. What a great childhood memory. There was such a better variety of soft drink flavors in those days. My favorite Canada Dry drink was Tahitian Treat, but I loved Purple Passion, too. I think half the fun of drinking one was that crazy, beautiful can!

I remember Purple Passion from the early seventies. I think it was a short lived thing in the Boston area because my mother could not find it after the one summer we drank it. Good to see the colorful can once again!
Mike - September 30, 2012 - Report this comment
I remember it being very short-lived -- they came into NYC and bought a LOT of radio time for the above-mentioned jingle (Summer of '70 or '71 as I recall) and I begged my mom to buy it. I assumed (because it was purple) that it would be grape flavor but it had a weird taste -- almost medicinal. It was gone from shelves by the following year.
Bob - February 03, 2013 - Report this comment
I may be completely off my rocker, but I remember something a little different. I remember the can being all dark purple with a cartoon-ish old lady's head (white hair, glasses, felt hat) and the soda named Grandma Moses' Purple Passion written in lighter purple. And I say Canada Dry bought the name and marketed it themselves with the psychedelic can.

I can't believe there's only 1 other person on this comment page who remembers that Purple Passion had/has EVERCLEAR in it. This was by far the most popular chick drink back in my high school days. Supposedly, luxco owns & sells an updated version but I've yet to see it. We used to buy it by the 2-liter bottle.
MWRuger - August 23, 2013 - Report this comment
Purple Passion with Everclear is in no way the same drink as the Canada Dry soda. Does anyone remember what tasted like? Cactus Cooler is easy to recreate and I imagine that purple passion is a mix of Grape and some other flavor. Any ideas?

Yes Bob, you're right, I was a young girl when I started drinking this soda and it was a hippie type person on the can. I loved this soda!! Yes it started being marketed differently after that. Being young I just assumed label changes. I'm glad I wasn't the only one who thought I had seen a person on the pop can!!! I sooooo miss this soda!

There was an alcoholic "Purple Passion" in the 80's and Early 90's, it was a different product from the soda and was one of my favorites even if a chick drink...if you have two bottle of purple passion and there are chicks at the party, who are they talking too...duuhhhh
thomas h. - June 24, 2014 - Report this comment
To all who want Purple Passion back. Blame your local Pepsi / Coke bottler. In the early 70's, big soft drink giants started to buy space in stores for their products. Little guys , like Canada Dry, got squeezed out. Send your complaints to federal government about soft drink company monopolies. It is illegal what they do, but gov will not do anything about it.

The jingle for Purple Passion was recorded by a Ohio based band called Owen B (formerly The Wildlife).Owen B had a minor hit with Mississippi Mama. The band wrote two jingles for Purple Passion and one was chosen which repeated the line “Purple Passion is good to drink” over and over, quietly at first and then louder with more instruments as the jingle progressed.
