I REALLY miss these and didn't realize they had been discontinued until I went on a manic search for one. According to Wikipedia they were discontinued in 2000. WHY?? They were so good.
Faith - January 10, 2008 - Report this comment
Now I believe they are labeled as a Snickers bar with Almonds instead of peanuts.

No "Snickers" ia a good second to the orlginal "MARS BAR". Snickers don't taste like "MARS Bars" did. They were one of a kind. To the guy who ordered there demise of "THE MARS BAR",jQA Meet me in the ally.
Mindy - February 22, 2010 - Report this comment
The original Mars bar, had almonds laying on the top of the candy bar, covered in chocolate. They were visibly there. After discontinuing them, they had a remake, they had the almonds chopped up inside. Not the same. Snickers does have a Snickers with Almonds, but it isn't a remake of Mars Bar though.

woo hoo, someone else remembers those original Mars Bars with the almonds lying across the top Almond-Joy-style -- they were my absolute favorite! shame on Mars for discontinuing them...

The original Mars Bar was the only 10 cent candy bar that I remember. All other candy bars were eith a nickle or six for a quarter. The original candy bar consisted of a soft nugget with the almonds on top covered with a better grade of choclate than the nickle candy bars used.

I am glad that someone else remembers the original Mars bars. You are exactly right: The Mars bar had two almonds on the top just like the Almond Joy, except Almond joy is made of coconut. I love Snickers with Almonds, but Mars, of course, is much better!
joyce - October 07, 2012 - Report this comment
I loved the Mars bar. I always thought they stopped making them because they were too expensive to make with the whole almonds on top. I'm sure a lot of people would be willing to pay the difference, but if a certain profit margin isn't there, the cheapos just discontiue and that's that!

I'm glad to find others feel the same way about the original Mars bar. It was my favourite chocolate bar when I was a kid. When I had one a few years ago, I thought something was different and I thought I remembered nuts being an ingredient. LOL glad to know I remember correctly. I wonder why the Almonds were removed?

I always remember Jamie Farr doing the commercials for them. You right they were much better than the ones today.

I bought a Mars bar recently and I didn't like it at all. I used to love them years ago, even more than Snickers. It was obvious the almonds were missing in the new Mars, what a disappointment.

Went looking for the Mars bar today and was shocked that I couldn't even find a picture of what the original looked like. Thought I'd lost my mind! Good to know so many fans still remember it. It's like they are trying to erase our past. What a shame.
70's bar fan - November 16, 2013 - Report this comment
Mars, the original bar was the best...they were my craving during my pregnancy. So disappointed when they were discontinued, why couldn't you have sold both and let the buyers decide. Bring the original back at least once a year and call it the 70's bar and make it available online also but don't get greedy with the price. How about that?
dsindm - October 19, 2014 - Report this comment
This wasn't unique to the Mars Bar, but the other thing about it was that it was very BIG compared to the standard sized bars today. Thanks to those above who reminded me that the other difference between the original Mars and the almond Snickers was that the original didn't have caramel.

The original Mars bar with the almonds on top & covered with chocolate were yummy. One of my favorite candy bars. Tried one of the new ones last week, not good. Tasted more like a Milkshake candy bar. Not worth the money. Would like to see some one start making the original bar again.

One month, I won ( I remember I picked Shell as my stock..lol) and I got to choose form the whole bags of candy hanging over our teachers desk- I chose 'Mars" bars.. omg. I ate half the bag on the way home from school..but since at age 11 I was already 5'7" and about 110 pounds.. I could do that then... I miss Mars...

Yes, back in the 50's and 60's it came in a "translucent green wrapper",about the shape of a bar of soap but about half as thick. Same with Three Musketeers in a white wrapper. And yes,the almonds were on top,and no caramel. It was a nickle back then.

I too loved the original Mars bars with almonds and white nougat covered in milk chocolate. Just recently I was told they make them in Europe. I ordered some to be sent to me in the U.S. and was very disappointed that they were not the same as I remember them. I did a search and found this forum. I wish they'd bring back the original Mars bars in the U.S.!

I had no idea they were discontinued until I read it on the internet. My heart and stomach hurt with total despair. I even wrote the company to bring it back. The Snickers with almonds do not compare. The dark chocolate Mars is gross also. There is nothing that compares to the original.

It's a shame they "Mars" would stop making the Mars bar, that's there name. Mars Corp. which makes snickers milky way m&ms and more. Mr Mars daughter owns the co. And has a different name I'm guessing her married name. One of the richest woman in the world. Bring back the original Mars Bar from the 60's

Another product from "Candy Row" in Chicago. 1920 was when Frank Mars began things. Milky Way, the original Mars (with Almonds) and Snickers were the original three. 3 Musketeers was introduced around 1963. From the Saturday morning cartoon vault, TV commercials for Milky Way and Mars Almond bar with veteran comedian Ed Wynn (the last year of his life). These aired on the "Beatles" cartoon show over ABC (10/30/65). The Milky Way ad also aired on "Milton the Monster" cartoon show over ABC (11/6/65).

Tom - March 12, 2018 - Report this comment
Mars Bars consisted originally of vanilla nougat topped with three or four whole almonds, all coated in chocolate. Something about the simplicity of the formula made them different from other candy bars, and to me, more delectable. Mars Bars were also less sweet overall than most candy bars, so you could perceive the distinct flavors and textures of the three primary components. In contact, Snickers came off to me like a homogeneous sugar bomb. Some time in the late 70's or early 80's, the company added a layer of caramel to the mix, and ruined the experience. Mars Bars became as cloyingly sweet as a Snickers, and almost indistinguishable from it in flavor. As Mars as a product was now indistinct from Snickers, it is not surprising that the brand identity was dispoed of and the product itself absorbed into the Snickers line. Wish they'd brig the original back. That's a candy bar I'd buy.

I had worked at Mars Candy Corporation on the westside of Chicago when these bars were made. Yes, it was a white nougat with the almonds on top, not within the nougat, but I could have sworn that it was darker chocolate & not the mild chocolate. The first 'line' that I worked on was the Mars bar line. We would sit back where the nougat was cut into bars, it would then go under a drum that would first place a line of chocolate down on top then the almonds were dropped on top...we would sit right after that to make sure that there were no more than 4 almonds per bar before it went under the chocolate spreader for the final chocolate layer. Many times the line would get out of sink & the chocolate & almonds were not landing on the bars at which point we had to take our arms & sweep everything off the belt into tubs...what a chocolate & almond mess it was, but it was fun & we would have chocolate & almond wars with each other, flinging the chocolate & almonds at each other. Sure miss that bar!! Another fun thing was to bring saltine crackers back from break or lunch/dinner & give them to the chocolate line men to lay down on the belt before the bars started coming out...then we had yummy chocolate covered saltine crackers to munch on...yumo!

From the daytime TV vault, how a box of Mars Bars won somebody over $10,000 on "Let's Make a Deal" over ABC in August, 1972. Monty Hall gave a man the box (containing a secret dollar amount). The man turned down the curtain, dodging a "Zonk." The box of Mars Bars contained a promissory $1500. The man buys a shot at the Big Deal with it. He picked the right door, winning a Cadillac El Dorado and 100 gallons gasoline (then, 35 c/gal.) for total of $10,500. When "Deal" began its Canadian run in the 1980s, Hall's announcer, Jay Stewart, was unavailable due to other commitments. Stewart (last name: Fix) had steady work after "Deal's" first run ended. Tragically, multiple events (daughter's suicide), depression and alcoholism added up to Stewart taking his own life in 1989 (age 71). Hall (real name: Halpmann) passed on last year, age 96.

Before producing animated cartoons, Hal Seeger edited comic books. Found one, "Farmer's Daughter" (1954), that wasn't suitable for kids. While not exactly porn, the lead character showed lots of cleavage. Enough said.

Inside the Kenosha (Wis.) News in October, 1971, an ad for Topps Discount store. Mars Fun Size bars in bags were on sale for $1.50, and mini Mars Almond bars were included. The Topps chain of stores began in the New England area in the early 1950s. Interstate was the parent company. Topps was independent, unlike other discount chains like Treasure Island (JC Penney), Jupiter and K Mart (Kresge) and Turn Style (Jewel-Osco), which were legs of larger department store chains.

Mars bars these days contain palm fat which make them stodgy and chewy. Back in the day this wasn't the case, it was proper milk chocolate that melted in the mouth. How I wished I could get Mars with the old recipe in the paper wrappers again!
