Description
This was out in 1973-1974. As with Spoon Candy, the commercial for it appealed enough to both mom and myself to try it. It was as described by others and quite good. It's span on the market was for no longer than Spoon Candy's and was gone by 1974. As for the commercial, here's what little I remember of it: A bald man with glasses tries unsuccessfully to say Fruit Float at lightning speed three times in a row, finally pausing and saying, "Wait a minute!" A freckle faced kid smiles and cuts in with, "Forget it." At the commercial's end the same kid smiles again and quips, "I'll bet you'll like it."

I'm glad someone else remembers this. I loved the strawberry flavored. If I am not mistaken, it cam in a can and you added milk or something and then let it "set up" like jello. Is this the same stuff.
julie - June 19, 2007 - Report this comment
I can't remember who made it, my mom and brother were hooked on this stuff, anyone know why they stopped making it? I wish someone had a recipie!

Jello came out with a pudding by the name of Jell-o Creme Savers. It is the closest taste to Fruit Float. It was introduced around 2004 but I haven't seen it in the stores in some time.

Yes... and they were awesome!!! I have been talking about these to my husband forever, but could never remember the name. We loved the commercials...it really is hard to say : ) I recall the Strawberry flavor. Sort of like a fruity pudding/yogurty dessert. I don't know why, but I am thinking they also had peach? Thanks for the great memeory!

Fruit Float was the best! Can anyone name all the flavors? Strawberry, peach, banana, lime??? When it says Libbys Libbys Libbys on the label label label you will like it like it like it on your table table table.

I'm really glad that others out there remember Fruit Float - it was really good!!! I liked all the flavors and recall that it tasted similar to fruit flavored yogurts today (but a bit sweeter, perhaps). A great product that never really caught on......

Stoney Field Farms makes an organic strawberry yogurt that reminds me of the taste of fruit float. See if you agree. I remember that was my favorite flavor. No one around me remembers fruit float. I was starting to wonder if I made it up. :-)

It was made by Libbys and I loved it. I even remember Libbys slogan. It was " If it says Libbys Libbys Libbys on the label label label, you will love it on your table table table!" Wow what a memory trip. I wish they still had the fruit float, it was so good.

THANK YOU!! My friends think I made up Fruit Float too! I'm from NY - was it a "Northern Thing"? I remember making it at my grandparent's house: cherry, strawberry, blueberry...those were me and my sibling's favorites...why wont they bring it back?????

I remember fruit float....and it literally made me sick....I can remember my mom making it and we all loved it....it tasted great, but there was something in it that made me throw up every time I ate the stuff. At first we thought it was a fluke or a virus but no....every time I ate it, I got sick....which I hated because it tasted sooooo good going down.

I have been trying to find a site about Fruit Float and I finally did! Nobody in my family remembers this, so I was beginning to think that I made this up in my head. I am soooo happy that others remember this. I remember making it and not liking it at all. I had not eaten yogurt in those days, so maybe I'd like it now. It sure reminds me of yogurt.

OMG this is a riot. I used to LOVE Fruit Float. Strawberry was my favorite. I was telling a coworker about it but she does not remember it. She does remember Whip N Chill though! Both were favorites but not many people I talk to remember it. So I Goodsearched it and here I am. BTW, for any of you Whip N Chill lovers, The Vermont Country Store sells it for $16.95. Chocolate, Strawberry and Vanilla. Each one makes between 28 and 32 servings. YUM!!

This stuff was great - my favorite after school snack - just add milk - I'd finish a whole can - I can remember strawberry and maybe Peach but others??? Why did Libbys discontinue the product?

Was this the stuff that seperated on it's own after it was poured into glasses. I thought it was called Libby's Parfaits

The stuff that separated into 3 layers was Jello 1-2-3. It was good stuff, but not Fruit Float. Fruit Float was great...i loved it, and then it was gone.

I remember it, but my parents bought 123 Gelatin more often than Fruit Float. And Junkit was another one.

I was about 10 years old when Fruit Float came out (yes, Libby's made it). I distinctly remember the "warning" on the label to stir it 30 times (after adding the milk) and NO MORE! Why? Would it explode? Great stuff!
Alan - March 05, 2008 - Report this comment
We use to have this when we went camping. Only remember peach and stawberry flavors so i guess that's the only flavor my parents bought. No one I ever mention this to remembers it. I think about it almost every time I have a peach yogurt. It was made by Libby's and the commercials had people trying to say Fruit Float 3 times fast. :-)

I loved Fruit Float, especially the strawberry flavor. I use to make it and eat the whole recipe before anyone in the family got their hands on it. There had never been anything that came close to that taste. It was awesome. Some yogurts of today come close, but not quite. I wish Libbys would put it on the market for a trial period for old time sake.

I just loved fruit float strawberry and blueberry were the best ,maybe if libbys knew we all loved it they would bring it back . because today people don't have time for homemade cooking like they did back then,

I Google everything that crosses my mind, and after eating a container of Peach Yoplait just now I was transported to a day 37 years ago when my mom presented me with a glass dessert cup in which she'd made Fruit Float. It was heaven- and I'm thrilled to know that other people had the same experience- that I didn't make it up. It was delicious- and like so many other great food items of the 70's (Banana Koogle, anyone?) sadly gone, gone, gone...

WOW - I remember this. My grandmother was a wonderful lady but a horrible cook. There's no telling what she fed my grandfather over the years. I remember one Saturday morning she attempted to make gravy for biscuits, she didn't think it was thick enough so she poured a can of Fruit Float in it. It was terrible but my grandfather ate every bite & never said a word.

This product was essentially high-sugar crap, but the commercial's jingle stuck in my mind. It went: "Bet ya like Fruit Float... but I bet you can't say it three times..." And then some cat would say "Fruit float, fruit floot...", obviously flubbing the attempt.

I remember it, and I remember watching the commercial I'm almost certain the commercial came on (at least once) during a show called "Wait Till Your Father Gets Home". My mom must have bought us the peach flavor, because some thirty years later I put a spoonful of peach yogurt into my mouth and Fruit Float memories flooded my mind. It was like I was a kid again. Fruit Float, Fruit Float, Fruit Float!!!

Ah yes, I remember Fruit Float! So good! My grandma used to get it for us.If I remember correctly it came in raspberry, strawberry, orange, and pineapple. Raspberry was my favorite, I loved it. Yes the person above is correct you would mix it with milk and let it set up. It had a thick pudding consistency. Such a good memory.I wish they'd make it again. It was made by Libby company. I have been asking people for several years if they remembered Libby's Fruit Float and no one does, except my mom who purchased it. I liked the stawberry flavor best. I thought it was already prepared and you just poured it out of the can. Was that a later version that didn't require mixing with milk. I wish they would bring it back. It reminds you of yogurt without the twang.

You can buy a product very similar to Fruit Float called "Fruiche". It is a Japanese product made by the House Foods Corporation. You add milk to it and it congeals just like Fruit Float did. If you have access to an Asian market (especially a Japanese one), you can probably get it there.

WOW!! I talk about this some times and only some people remember Fruit Float. "Fruit Float Fruit Float Fruit Float!!" We used to say that all the time. I was about 8 or 9 at the time, growing up in Northern Maine, and I used to love the stuff! Every time I have peach Yoplait I think of Fruit Float. It's the closest thing I've eaten that seems the same. Yogurt was newish back in the early 70s, so maybe Libby's realized that canning yogurt wasn't such a good idea! Or maybe it was lethal... ha! Who knows why such an awesome product would disappear like that!

I absolutely loved this stuff! I think my parents and I tried every flavor, and there wasn't a bad one in the bunch -- but I think peach was probably my favorite. I have no idea why they quit making it, but I really hope they'll consider bringing it back. The only thing I'm not sure about is how it 'worked' -- maybe it contained something the FDA decided was unwholesome, like the thicking agent, perhaps. I hope not, though, because I'd love to see it make a comeback!

I have been trying to think of the name and I just thought of it and googled it. Great to find others who remember it, too. What I remember most and have been wanting to make with it used to be my family's favorite dessert. You took angel food cake and broke it into pieces in a loaf pan and thern poured the mixture over the cake and mixed it all up. Chill it and then turn it out onto a plate and slice it. Then top it with whipped crean and enjoy. Great for summer and I have been craving it lately!

I enjoyed this short-lived treat. If we'd known it was going to be discontinued as soon as it was, I suspect my parents would have stocked up on a case or two of each flavor. Libby's is still around; perhaps they would consider re-introducing it. It was right up there with Spoon Candy, as has been pointed out, and I suspect most of us wouldn't mind seeing that make a comeback, as well.

I was a big fan of this product as well. I sent the link to this site to Libby's. We'll see what happens.

I remember Fruit Float from the early 1970s. It was good, but was quite expensive for its time. Did not last very long either, kind of like IceFlo slush, which lasted about as long and was from that time period.

My family loved Libby's Fruit Float. I used to shop once a week for groceries and always prepared balanced meals to insure proper nutrition for my family of four. This was a great nutritional dessert and I recall preparing the peach and the strawberry. Wish Libby's would bring it back. It was economical, as well as easy and simple to prepare. And had nutritional value as well as being a light delicious dessert. So thankful that others remember and that most loved it as our family did.

Thank goodness there are others who remember this. Used to be my favorite. Would be great if they would bring this back & bring many of us back to our childhood. Wonder if they still even have the recipe. LOL!!

Maybe someone could figure out what was in the can(ingredients ) and come up with a recipe where we could make it at home

If anyone does have any ideas for finding/recreating the recipe, I would be willing to invest real money towards such an effort (up to a couple/few hundred dollars at least). You can email me directly at dave767@hotmail.com if anything is in the works. Dave S, Dearborn, MI

I remember this product as a kid. Activia yogurt actually reminds a lot of this product. For example strawberry Activia tastes a lot like I recall strawberry fruit float and so on. The Activia is also a healthy alternative to what Fruit Foat was.

I also loved this stuff. I always had the peach flavor. Today I pureed about 1/2 cup of thawed peaches with a touch of water and sugar then mixed it with a small couple container of peach yogurt. The texture and flavor of this concoction is very similar to what I remember!

So happy other's remember this amazing treat. My Great-Grandmother used to buy it for me. It was such a treat. NO ONE I've ever talked to remembers it. Now there's A LOT that does.....I liked that someone suggested trying Stonyfield Organic Yogurt- Strawberry. I will do. Thanks for the suggestion....Cheers my fellow Fruit Float Lovers

Fruit Float is still made in Japan. It’s called “Fruiche.” It’s pretty much identical to the old product except it comes in packets instead of can. Dump the packet of fruit syrup in a bowl, add a cup of cold milk, stir vigorously, voila! Libby’s old dessert lives on in the Millennium. You can find Fruiche at some Asian markets, and I’ve also seen it listed on eBay and Amazon.

Fruit Float was awesome! I had Strawberry all the time when I was a kid (Long Beach, NY). Then it vanished from the shelves--I always thought that the FDA banned one of the ingredients, lol. If so, we need to disband the FDA NOW! BRING BACK FRUIT FLOAT!!!!!

This is actually fruit, milk, and sugar mixed with pectin so it helps. You can find a recipe by searching for the Japanese product. Pectin typically is a product within apples and several fruits and that is added to jelly, jam, and preserves. This is why it tastes like yogurt. My mom tried it in the seventies, and it was a big hit at our house. Ever since then, when I eat strawberry yogurt, I think, "This tastes like Fruit Float".

Fruiche is a Japanese dessert since the seventies. You can find a recipe approximation on the internet and it just has pectin added to milk, sugar, and whatever fruit you like.
